Career Highlights

Dr. Sean Stein Smith is an assistant professor of Accounting in the Economics and Business Department at Lehman College. Sean serves on the Advisory Board of the Wall Street Blockchain Alliance, where he leads the Accounting Working Group. He is also the chairperson on the New Jersey Society of CPAs Emerging Technology Interest Group. He has been named a 40 under 40 in the accounting profession by CPA Practice Advisor (2017-2020), and by the NYSSCPA (2020), and has been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting (2019). Sean served as the E.C. Harwood Visiting Research Fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research during 2019, and has had books published, or in the publication process, at Taylor and Francis, Springer, and Palgrave-MacMillan. Sean is also the founder of the Institute for Blockchain & Cryptoasset Research, a nonpartisan institute focused on blockchain and cryptoasset adoption and utilization.

What are you doing to make a difference in the profession, your community, the world?

In addition to his accounting specific thought leadership, Sean also serves the broader community through his role on the Board of Governors of Fairleigh Dickinson University, the largest private university in New Jersey, and Sean’s alma mater. The of Board of Governors collaborates with senior administrators, alumni, and the broader community; Sean serves as the chair of the Events committee and has since 2018. Sean also has a track record of  volunteering through the NJCPA, he has presented several times on the career opportunities and potential for accounting graduates via the “Pay It Forward” program; playing my own small role to assist cultivating future leaders of the profession.
