Feb. 18, 2013 -- From managing client accounts at a large regional firm, to helping other professional accountants build stronger practices, L. Gary Boomer, CPA.CITP, has seen all aspects of the profession. On Sunday, the president of Boomer Consulting became the latest professional to be inducted into CPA Practice Advisor’s Accounting Hall of Fame.
Boomer was presented with the award on Sunday evening, during a special event at the 2013 CPA Thought Leader Symposium in Dallas, Texas. The event also recognized the most influential thought leaders in the tax and accounting profession.
Boomer joins Hall of Fame members Greg LaFollette, CPA.CITP, Randy Johnston and Rick Richardson, CPA.CITP.
Prior to starting Boomer Consulting, the veteran professional provided client accounting and management services while at Varney and Associates, a regional public accounting firm in Manhattan, Kansas. He started the consulting firm in 1996 because he wanted to focus on helping other firms be more productive.
Boomer Consulting was one of the first technology strategy consultants for accounting firms, and Gary was recognized early on as a leader. His technology expertise had begun well prior, however, and he was among five CPAs that IBM selected to help evangelize technology and computers to professional accountants in the 1980s. Since then, he has been widely recognized as a leader in the profession.
Has been heavily involved with the AICPA, and served for a time as head of the IT Exec committee. He also served on a variety of other committees and studies by the group. Boomer is also a past president of the Kansas Society of CPAs.
Over the past decades, he has been widely recognized by many professional organizations and publications, and has been named one of the most recommended consultants.
One of Gary’s chief accomplishments, according to his son Jim, is that he set out to build something larger than himself.
“He’s really proud that he has created something beyond Gary Boomer,” Jim, also a CPA, said. “He set out to build a team that would grow and continue to help professional accounting firms, into the future. He’s done that."
Members of Boomer Consulting have been selected as the top thought leaders in the profession since CPA Practice Advisor started the annual symposium.
