North Carolina woman charged with tax fraud

A Rocky Mount woman was charged in federal court Friday for allegedly preparing federal income tax returns totaling $40,867.
Tina Johnson, 45, of Rocky Mount, entered into a plea agreement in which she will plead guilty to tax fraud and aiding and abetting in violation of federal law. The case will be scheduled before Chief United States District Judge James Dever.
The Criminal Investigation unit of the Internal Revenue Service found that between January 2008 and June 2008, Johnson presented to the IRS claims for payment that were false by preparing federal income tax returns for individuals totaling $40,867.
“Our tax system relies on the honesty of taxpayers with a heightened duty of honesty expected from professional tax preparers,” said U.S. Attorney Thomas Walker with the Eastern District of North Carolina. “Whenever someone, like Johnson, deliberately files false returns, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in support of the IRS will pursue the matter through the courts as provided by our laws.”
