San Antonio CPA Chapter Wins Financial Literacy Service Award

Group Has Dedicated more than 6,200 Volunteer Hours to Date Serving the Community

DALLAS — April 15, 2011 — The San Antonio Chapter of the Texas
Society of CPAs was recently named the recipient of the Texas Credit Union League
Focus Award for its financial literacy efforts. The chapter will receive the
award at the TCUL annual meeting and awards and recognition ceremony in Austin
on April 26.

The Focus Award recognizes individuals, credit unions, chapters, organizations
and foundations that best exemplify the philosophy of people helping people
through financial education.

TSCPA’s San Antonio Chapter is dedicated to increasing financial literacy
in several areas, including Operation Home Front Village which serves military
families who are being medically retired by assisting with their transition
out of the military through rent-free living (including utilities) for 3-9 months,
until their full medical board reviews and retirement is complete and pay is
in place.

During their stay at the village, training requirements are demanded of the
tenants, including a one-hour session of financial counseling each month. Operation
Home Front Village is home to 27 wounded warriors and families who are receiving
treatment at nearby Brooke Army Medical Center.

Through the San Antonio Chapter’s financial literacy committee efforts,
personal finance coaching is provided to these families. Chapter volunteers
work one-on-one with each family each month, helping them prepare a monthly
budget, create a plan to build an emergency reserve, set goals and foster financial
discipline, and develop a debt reduction strategy (if needed). The average stay
for each family at the village is six months, and the volunteer’s desire
is to remain coaching the family during their entire stay.

In addition to its work with the village, the chapter also serves the San Antonio
Metropolitan Ministries (SAMMinistries), local Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops
and Junior Duel in Ol’ San Antonio.
