CPA Firms Added to IRS Tax Preparer Registration Requirements
By Isaac M. O'Bannon, Editor - Wednesday September 29, 2010As part of the new IRS preparer registration initiative, the IRS has announced that preparers at CPA firms will also be required to obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). The IRS had initially considered exempting CPA practices from the requirement. Under the new registration system, all persons receiving payment for preparing all or substantially all of a tax return for another person are required to register and pay a $64.25 fee. As of Tuesday, September 28, the new online registration system is available at the IRS website: www.irs.gov/taxpros/article/0,,id=210909,00.html. The IRS noted that individuals who currently possess a PTIN will need to reapply under the new system but generally will be reassigned the same... -
Should you Have a Professional and Personal Facebook Page?
By Scott Cytron, ABC; President, Cytron and Co. - Monday September 13, 2010Recently, this question has popped up more than usual. Should an accountant have two Facebook pages - one for professional reasons and one for friends and family? My advice is simple: If your Facebook page is more personal than professional - and the "personal" is intended only for close friends and family - you'll want two pages. Unfortunately, few of us have time to manage two accounts. The better way to go is to have a corporate Facebook page that represents your firm or company. Instead of the page serving as the professional side of "you," it's more a reflection of the business itself. Realize, however, that you'll need a personal Facebook page before you can set up a corporate page. The corporate page has to be tied to a personal... -
Don't Let The Bedbugs Bite
By Dave McClure, Contributing Writer/Columnist - Friday September 3, 2010As a columnist, I get inundated with story pitches from PR firms, vendors and pundits. Most of them I just pass by, because they are not relevant to the things I write about, are not interesting, or have a bizarre point of view. So when Angela Cuzzo of MRB Public Relations, who does work for Cabinet NG, pitched me on a story idea, I set it aside. Well, first I laughed, then I set it aside. Because Angela was making the case that with the rising infestation of bedbugs, accounting firms that have not yet converted to electronic document management systems should do so for health reasons. She even quoted a recent article by Laura Petrecca of USA Today, who says, “Most cubicle dwellers and corner office executives are blissfully... -
How Critical is Your Smart Phone?
By Isaac M. O'Bannon, Editor - Friday August 20, 2010As a technology information source, here at the CPA Tech Views blog and at the The CPA Technology Advisor we generally focus on how technologies can aid in streamlining workflow in professional practices or even enhance client relationships. The point is often made that effective implementation and adaption is key: In other words, how the technology is being used determines its effectiveness. Well, for some people, non-use can also be an effective strategy. And that doesn't just mean old-school curmudgeons who refuse to see the promise in proven technologies. Believe it or not, some of the top business leaders in the U.S. have shunned mobile phones because of their potential for distraction from other issues. They include Warren Buffett... -
I told you so...
By Dave McClure, Contributing Writer/Columnist - Saturday July 31, 2010Suppose I called you up tonight, and told you that everything you do online...everything you put on FaceBook or any other web site...is just used to invade your privacy. Would you care? In 1998 I went to an Internet conference called ISPCon with Peter Coroneos, who runs the Australian Internet Industry Association. Peter was aghast that he had to give up so much personal information just to enter a TRADE SHOW. He asked how it was that Americans were so ready to trade the most intimate details of their lives just to make a simple transaction like buying a ticket for a show or to ride a train. I didn't have an answer then, but I do now. I refuse. I have dropped out of FaceBook, don't Twitter or Tweet, and refuse to give real... -
Why Silverlight Matters
By Dave McClure, Contributing Writer/Columnist - Thursday July 29, 2010I'm no Microserf, and I can cite in chapter and verse why the guys in Redmond have blown major opportunities in their history. Remember the multiple mis-steps with MSN (and the even more dreadful concept behind MSNBC), or the deeply failed Web TV? I am still confused as to what Windows 98SE was all about, and why you can't easily rotate text in Word. They never made it off the ground with Microsoft Money, and still can't seem to produce a simple graphics program more sophisticated than Paint. Nor was I very impressed when Microsoft first introduced its first generation streaming video product called Silverlight. With Adobe Flash and Quicktime dominating the web scene, it seemed that there was little that Microsoft had to offer... -
Payroll and Your Practice...
By Isaac M. O'Bannon, Editor - Friday July 23, 2010What do you think of payroll? Does your firm consider payroll services as a significant component of your offerings? For professional accounting firms, payroll services have been somewhat of a roller coaster ride over the past couple of decades, and many firms are eagerly diving back into the client service. Why? Because this core need of businesses of all sizes is still a great client relationship strengthener and, perhaps just as importantly, because technology has finally caught up to the needs of professional firms, making managing multiple, dozens or even 100+ client payrolls not only possible,t) but very profitable. Yes, payroll is becoming a core revenue center, with the result that many firms are taking back their client... -
Reach Out and Touch a Client
By Scott Cytron, ABC; President, Cytron and Co. - Wednesday July 7, 2010Just last week, I had the honor of presenting a morning program to the Louisiana Society of Independent Accountants in Shreveport - a state organization connected to the National Society of Accountants. The Louisiana group is mostly made up of public accountants who are enrolled agents. They came from all over the state for the organization's annual conference. After speaking to the LSIA's president, I knew I had to keep the program pretty basic. He admitted that many attendees would prefer not to attempt e-filing, something that's routine to most accountants. He also asked me to stay away from "that Twitter stuff." Of course, I included an entire section on social media in my talk because I knew the group would want to know about... -
