From the June 2011 Review of Document Management Systems
Best Firm Fit:
Treeno solutions are traditionally more focused on corporate accounting departments than on accounting firms, but the SaaS deployment option makes this a viable solution for firms of all sizes. If your firm is using any of the integrated accounting software applications listed below, Treeno may be a good fit.
Core Product Functions/Features:
The Treeno interface is designed with a metadata search panel on the left, a simple toolbar along the top, and the document hit list and preview panel in the middle of the screen. When a document is opened for preview, a new toolbar appears with the functions needed to manage the metadata associated with the file. The system is intuitive and easy to navigate.
The file organization is based on cabinets. Each cabinet can have a unique metadata model. Users can filter the document search with any combination of metadata tags, which allows searches across multiple folders. Files can be uploaded directly into Treeno from within the application or via drag and drop from Windows Explorer.

Treeno provides a number of management reports, including a personal inbox of assigned documents, average time to process a workflow, work in progress report, versioning history report and more.
Document Workflow:
Treeno provides integration with UltraTax CS, ProSystem fx Tax, Microsoft Dynamics GP, MAS 500 and QuickBooks. Add-ins for Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word facilitate saving files directly into Treeno. Outlook messages and attachments can be uploaded via drag and drop. Information from the e-mail message can be used to populate selected metadata tags. Native applications can also be launched from within Treeno when a file is selected to open.
Treeno’s workflow functionality is comprehensive. Workflows can be designed and setup using a graphical flowcharting tool, and can branch based on pre-defined rules. The workflow application can be integrated with other applications to trigger routing of documents. Users receive e-mail notifications when a workflow is routed, and notes or instructions can be attached to the document(s) during routing. A detailed document workflow history report is available.
Document Control:
User access security controls will remove tools from the toolbar that are not accessible by the user. Permissions can be set at the document type level. Document retention is controlled by user-defined scripts that define what documents get purged and when.
Version control is provided by saving a separate version of the file every time it is checked back in. An audit trail of all versions is provided.
Special Features:
An integrated portal is available, and documents can be published directly to it. A search screen is published to the portal to help the client search through documents posted to their portal, and all file types can be published. Treeno provides bar code support to facilitate the scanning process, and an OCR engine will convert scanned documents. Treeno can be deployed in three alternative models: a full browser-based SaaS application, on-premises, or on a pre-loaded Treeno appliance.
