From the August 2010 Review of Time & Billing Systems.

Time tracking and management systems run the gamut, from very basic systems to extremely comprehensive, high-end programs. For many small and mid-sized businesses in the middle, however, the low-end systems are too limited and the upper side of the spectrum can be cost-prohibitive and difficult to maintain and use.

That’s where Virtual TimeClock fits, providing an easy-to-use and inexpensive time tracking program that works with Windows and Mac computers. Virtual TimeClock can be used for tracking both billable time and internal employee time, with the system offering basic task and project management features, including the ability to produce reports for projects or tasks, which the business can set up for client work.

The program’s feature set is more geared toward employee time management and payroll functions. However, the Pro and Network versions of the system offer tracking for unlimited employees, with the ability to record regular and overtime hours, track salaried and hourly staff, maintain any payroll frequency, calculate gross wages for job costing, create user-defined shift periods, and manage accruals such as holidays, vacations, sick leave, personal time and custom leave categories. Other features include an employee in/out board view, the ability to create employee groups and locations, and options for adding activities or managers to groups.

Virtual TimeClock’s reporting options include detail and support timecard options, historical prior payroll periods, departmental reports, paid-time-off accruals, and time and payroll by activity, job or task. A built-in report writer offers full customization of reports and the program can export data into CheckMark Payroll. Virtual TimeClock is a locally installed program, with updates and technical support included. Pricing starts at $99 for the three-user Basic version, while the unlimited-user Pro version is $195. A Network version of Virtual TimeClock is also available.
